Liability auto insurance is a type of vehicle insurance policy that covers the cost of personal and property damage you caused to another person in an accident. It’s important to remember that auto liability insurance does not cover injuries or property damage to the driver. Except for New Hampshire, every state requires drivers to carry some kind of liability insurance.
Liability coverage is broken down into two parts:
- bodily injury
- property damage
Bodily injury liability insurance covers injuries sustained by other people in an accident when you are at fault. This can include medical bills, prescriptions, lost income, pain, and suffering compensation, etc.
Property damage liability insurance helps pay to repair the damage you caused to another person's vehicle or property. It may also include the costs of a rental vehicle while the other person’s car is being repaired.
There are limits on the expenses your liability policy will cover. You choose these limits when you purchase the insurance. They are usually expressed as three numbers, for example, 50/100/75. The first figure in your liability coverage is the most your insurance provider will pay for a single person's bodily injury claim. For example, the 50 indicates $50,000 in coverage in this case. The second number in your liability coverage represents the highest amount your insurance provider will pay for bodily injury claims for a total accident. The third number in your liability policy is the maximum amount your insurance company will pay for property damage claims.
Be sure to get adequate coverage when you set these limits. If your actions cause an accident, you will want to be sure you can pay for the damage.
What isn't covered by vehicle liability insurance?
Liability insurance compensates for the harm you cause to another person as a result of an accident you caused. However, it does not cover damages to your property or your personal injuries. Thus, you need other coverages to cover your injuries and damages such as collision coverage, comprehensive coverage, medical payments, and personal injury protection coverage.
